COVID-19: Japan Grants $137 mln Loan to Uzbekistan
TASHKENT (UzReport) — Japan has announced its intention to allocate funds totalling $137 mln to support Uzbekistan’s response to the COVID-19 crisis and contribute to its social and economic stability.
The exchange note was signed on Friday between Japanese Ambassador Yoshinori Fujiyama and Uzbek Deputy Finance Minister Odilbek Isakov. The funds are to be provided at a rate of 0.01% per year for 15 years with a grace period of 4 years.

This is not a loan, it’s free money; almost no interest, a grace period of 4 years. The point is why Japan is so generous to Uzbekistan? What is at stake?
