KABUL (Ruptly) — At least 23 people were killed and many more were injured in the Sangin district of Afghanistan’s Helmand province on Monday, when multiple rockets landed on a livestock-trading bazaar.

The incident came just one day after a roadside bomb in Helmand claimed the lives of six civilians on Sunday. According to reports, both the government and the Taliban have blamed one another for the attack.

While estimates vary, Omar Zwak, a spokesperson for the Helmand governor confirmed there were “a lot of casualties”, and said the number of dead could exceed thirty. Several of those hurt in the incident were taken to hospital near the city of Lashkargah, where they were treated for their injuries.

Ashnaullah, eyewitness of attack says in Pashto:

I have seen at least 25 wounded in Sangin (a district in Helmand province) at the market and deaths might be 40. I have seen seven deaths and four wounded from my villagers.

Edrees, another eyewitness (Pashto):

First of all, a single rocket arrived then multiple rockets hit just the centre of the market, I was in a hurry. I left my place there; I called the ambulances and private vehicles for help. Majority may be killed and wounded. The injuries might be around 40 people.

Omar Zwak, spokesman for Helmand Governor declares (Pashto):

In Sangin district near an old market, the insurgents dropped rockets on a gathering place which feared a lot of casualties, among the killings at least 30 people and over 15 people were wounded.
