KABUL (Pajhwok Afghan News) — A Romanian diplomat was killed in Tuesday’s night bombing in capital Kabul, says Romanian Foreign Ministry in a statement on Wednesday. At least 16 people were killed and 119 others wounded when an explosion targeted Green Village fortified compound.

The attack was carried out with car bombs and machine guns.

Romanian leaders have paid tribute to the 43-year-old diplomat killed in Kabul in a suspected Taliban terror attack on the compound that hosts the embassy in Afghanistan. He was part of the security structure of the embassy. Another Romanian embassy staffer was seriously injured in the attack, which started on Monday night and lasted several hours. He was expected to be transported to Europe to receive specialized treatment for his injuries.

Some media reports from Afghanistan put at more than 30 the death toll of the attack at the Green Village fortified compound that hosts the Romanian embassy as well as some foreign contractors and security companies.

With over 750 troops deployed on the ground, Romania is, after the US, the UK, Germany and Italy, the largest contributor to the NATO-led peace keeping mission in Afghanistan. Since it started deploying troops in Afghanistan as part of an international coalition in 2002, Romania has sent the country more than 26,000 soldiers. According to government statistics, 181 of them have been injured and 26 have died as a result of violent actions over this period in Afghanistan.

The latest violence occurs as the US announced plans to withdraw its approximately 14,000 troops from Afghanistan, following an agreement reached with the Taliban that they will not allow the country to be used as a base for Al-Qaeda or other extremist groups planning terror attacks in the West. The deal has not yet been signed by US President Donald Trump, but he has made no secret of his wish to extricate the US from what he sees as an un-winnable war.
