Afghans Return Home as Pakistan Border Reopens
TORKHAM (Ruptly) — Scores of Afghan nationals were filmed crossing the Torkham border point from Pakistan into Afghanistan, on Saturday, as it was opened for the first time in two months, after it was closed to prevent the potential spreading of the coronavirus, resulting in many people stranded on both sides.
According to data collected by Johns Hopkins University, Afghanistan has 6,402 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 168 deaths associated with the virus.
Footage shows the passengers travelling by foot, and having their temperatures measured by health workers. Abas Tanha, a passenger, said:
About three months when the Torkham border was closed due to the coronavirus outbreak, we were stranded in Punjab, Pakistan. We faced many problems there, we didn’t work during this time.
