ASHGABAT (Satrapia) — The next Council of Elders of Turkmenistan will be held on October 9, 2017 in the district of Ak Bugday Akhal velayat (region). The corresponding decree was signed by Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

The text of the document notes that the Council of Elders is convened in accordance with the democratic principles and traditions of the Turkmen society, and also in order to use the rich life experience of the elders in strengthening the unity of the people, in joint discussion and resolution of topical issues of state building.

The Council of Elders of Turkmenistan is a representative advisory body headed by the head of state. The tradition of holding the Council of Elders dates back to the ancient times. Having revived the practice of holding the Council of Elders in modern days, the government of Turkmenistan seeks to “support” its policy by the authority of elders, who traditionally enjoy great respect in the Turkmen society.

The Council of Elders consists of 600 people with 100 elders coming from each of the five regions and the city of Ashgabat. Members of the Council of Elders must be over 60-year old. They should have at least 25 years of work record and enjoy respect and authority among people. Members of the Council of Elders are nominated by the establishments, organizations, companies and associations of citizens and public associations.

The Council of Elders is convened at least once a year at the suggestion of the President of Turkmenistan, and it is held alternately in each of the five regions of the country and the city of Ashgabat.
