DUSHANBE (TajikTTA) — China will accord Tajikistan chairmanship in the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in September. This will happen in the fields of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov said:

Tajikistan is the next chairman of the CICA. Literally, a month later, in the city of New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the chairmanship will be transferred from the People’s Republic of China to Tajikistan.

For the first time the idea of convening CICA was voiced by the President of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev on October 5, 1992 at the 47^th session of the UN General Assembly. The main goal of this initiative is to create an effective structure for ensuring peace and security in Asia.

Today CICA includes 27 member states, which cover about 90% of the territory and population of the continent. Seven countries and four international organizations, including the UN, have observer status. All decisions within the CICA framework are taken by consensus.
