Curfew in Baghdad as Thousands Continue Protests
BAGHDAD (Ruptly) — Thousands of demonstrators remained on the streets of Baghdad on Monday, as the wave of anti-government protests entered their fourth day. Iraqi state television reported that the Iraqi military declared a curfew in Baghdad from midnight (21:00 GMT) until 6:00 AM (03:00 GMT) “until further notice”.
Baghdad is one of the country’s two main cities, including Nasiriya, where Iraqi security forces were deployed to disperse the crowds.
Over 60 protesters have reportedly been killed since anti-government protests resumed in Baghdad on Friday, after a three-week hiatus.
Iraqi protests began in early October over corruption, unemployment and lack of basic services. However, demonstrations were suspended after the security forces started using live ammunition, reportedly killing nearly 150 people.
