Baghdad: At Least 1 Killed at Anti-Government Protest
BAGHDAD (Ruptly) — At least one person was killed and more than 200 injured after anti-government protesters clashed with police in Baghdad on Tuesday.
The clashes reportedly occurred when the police shot tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets to repel protesters from their attempt to storm Baghdad’s Green Zone, which is home to government buildings.
According to reports, one person was killed and at least twenty were wounded in clashes during a concurrent anti-government protest in Nasiriyah, a city in southern Iraq.
“The prime minister should come to Tahrir Square, speak to the protesters and give them positive promises. The political system is a failure — the Islamic and democratic system is a failure, we want a civil system”, a Baghdad resident told journalists at the protest.
“If the demands are not met, it will lead to a massive uprising by these protesters, and this will be against their thrones”, another citizen added.
