PARIS (Satrapia) — The Russian citizens overwhelmingly approved in a referendum on Wednesday, July 1st, the vast constitutional revision that would allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to remain in the Kremlin for two more terms, that is until 2036.
The package of amendments was approved by 74.1% of voters during the consultation on the incumbent president’s term of office, but also introduced new conservative principles into the constitution. In particular, it will allow Vladimir Putin to remain in the Kremlin for two more terms, until 2036.
The outcome of the election was never in doubt: the reform had already been approved by the legislature at the beginning of the year and the new text of the Constitution is already on sale in bookstores.
