NEW DELHI (WION) — The UAE is all set to become the Arab world’s first nuclear power in a matter of weeks.
The Barakah nuclear power plant is under construction since 2012 and will finally become functioning as the first of its four nuclear reactors will start operations.
The Barakah nuclear power plant consists of four APR-1400 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 5,600 MW. The site is in the Gharbiya region of Abu Dhabi, on the coastline of the Persian Gulf.
In December 2009, Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) awarded a coalition led by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) a $20 bln bid to build the first nuclear power plant in the UAE. Barakah was chosen as the site.
