TRIPOLI (Government of National Accord via Ruptly) — A delegation of top Turkish officials convened with members of Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli on Wednesday.
According to reports, the Turkish delegation’s visit to Tripoli comes at a time when Ankara’s help to the GNA has allowed them to push back Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) and its allies from most of the northwest of the country towards Sirte.
Topics discussed at the meeting reportedly included increased energy cooperation, as well as the possible establishment of two Turkish military bases within the African country.
Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, as well as Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak could be seen being welcomed by GNA leader Fayez Sarraj before heading to hold talks. The GNA’s Foreign Minister Tahir Siyala as well as Interior Minister Fathi Basagha also attended the meeting.
Libya faces turmoil following the 2011 ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. In recent years, the country has been divided into areas controlled by the GNA in Tripoli and the north-west, and LNA-held territories in Benghazi in the east, ruled by Haftar.
