PM Hariri to Submit Resignation

Tuesday 29 October 2019

BEIRUT (Al Jazeera) — Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced that he was going to submit his resignation to the country’s President Michel Aoun, in a short speech in Beirut on Tuesday.

Hariri said he was in a “deadlock” after unprecedented demonstrations paralyzed the country. After the long-awaited declaration, Lebanese demonstrators took to the streets to celebrate.

Rami Khouri, senior public policy researcher and professor at the American University of Beirut, discusses the latest updates:

Over the last weeks, Lebanon has been gripped by mass protests, believed to be the country’s largest since 2015, as demonstrators took to the streets to voice their discontent with deteriorating living conditions, austerity measures, capital flight and the rise of the deficit and public debt.

Earlier Tuesday, Hezbollah supporters attacked a protest camp set up by anti-government demonstrators, destroying tents and roadblocks. Banks closed for the tenth day in a row, putting further pressure on an already difficult economic situation.
