NUR-SULTAN / ex ASTANA (TASS) — According to preliminary data, four people were killed, two were injured in the crash of the Antonov An-26 aircraft near the Almaty airport, according to press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan.
The press service stated :
At 17:25 [local time], information was received from the dispatching service of the Almaty airport that at 17:22 the An-26 military aircraft from Nur-Sultan to Almaty disappeared from the radar and made an emergency landing at the Almaty airport.
The fire at the scene was noted to have been extinguished.
The Antonov An-26 is a twin-engined turboprop civilian and military transport aircraft, designed and produced in the Soviet Union from 1969 to 1986. In December 2915, Kazakh Air Force had still five An-24 or An-26 in service and received one refurbished An-26 from Ukraine in 2017. The plane that crashed must be one of these military Antonovs.

The aircraft is getting a bit old, production stopped in 1986 (35 years ago). The scarcity of spare parts must certainly be affecting it.

The plane belonged to Kazakhstan’s border guard service, part of the National Security Committee.
