Pence Announces 120-Hour Ceasefire in Northern Syria

Thursday 17 October 2019

ANKARA (Ruptly) — US Vice President Mike Pence announced that the United States and Turkey agreed to a ceasefire in northern Syria, while speaking to the press alongside US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Ankara on Thursday.

The VP travelled to Turkey for talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in order to halt Turkey’s Operation Peace Spring which began a week earlier.

Pence said:

Today, the United States and Turkey have agreed to a ceasefire in Syria. The Turkish side will pause Operation Peace Spring in order to allow the withdrawal of YPG forces from the safe zone for 120 hours

[…]

Operation Peace Spring will be halted entirely on completion of the withdrawal.

He added no new sanctions would be added during the ceasefire, and sanctions imposed by the United States on Turkey since the beginning of the operation would be withdrawn once the military operation is fully halted.
