Pakistan: Nationwide Strike Called to ecry Ban of TLP
KARACHI (Ruptly) — Businesses and public transport were shut in Karachi on Monday as religious leaders called for a nationwide strike to protest the ban of the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) party, which the Pakistani government accuses of engaging in terrorism.
The strike comes a day after clashes broke out in Karachi and Lahore between police and supporters of the TLP, leaving at least three dead and 20 injured.
In the past week, thousands rallied across Pakistan in protests led by the TLP to pressure Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan to fulfil his promise to expel the French ambassador over the Charlie Hebdo cartoon controversy.
As many protests turned violent, the government arrested hundreds of TLP members and banned the group on Thursday, saying the party have “engaged in terrorism, acted in a manner prejudicial to the peace and security of the country.”
