Mogherini on Iran and the Nuclear Issue

Wednesday 25 September 2019

NEW YORK (United Nations press service) — Briefing by Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, following the meeting of the JCPOA Members with Iran.

Mogherini’s statements came after meeting with the top diplomats from Germany, France, Italy, Russia and China on one side and Iran on the other. Mogherini stated that it was “increasingly difficult” to preserve the deal, but added that the steps that Iran took to reduce nuclear deal commitments were “reversible”.

Mogherini’s assurances about the EU’s commitment to the nuclear agreement as signed contradict the sentiment given by the various European countries, which are increasingly abandoning Iran on the grounds that it is behind the drone attack on Saudi oil installations on September 14.
