BISHKEK (Presidential Office of Kyrgyzstan via Ruptly) — Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov held an emergency meeting with his Security Council in Bishkek on Thursday, after the attempted arrest of ex-leader Almazbek Atambayev in the village of Koi-Tash the day earlier.

According to a statement, Jeenbekov accused Atambayev of violating the constitution and laws of the Kyrgyz Republic by displaying armed resistance. He appealed to the members of the Security Council, emphasising the need to carry out all measures to preserve the rule of law, peace and security in the country.

Former President Atambayev issued a statement to the country and current authorities after the attempt to detain him on Wednesday. “Do not shoot your own people. This is all going to end badly for you”, he said to law enforcement members, adding that “We are not terrorists, neither me nor the civil people, who gathered near the house today.”

According to the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health, 52 people were injured during the police raid and the following unrest at the former president’s mansion.

Atambayev’s immunity as the former leader of the country was revoked by the Kyrgyz parliament in June, and he faces corruption charges.
