BISHKEK (Ruptly) — Dozens of people gathered outside the government building in Bishkek on Thursday to call for an end to border clashes with Tajikistan.
Both Bishkek and Dushanbe have blamed each other for opening fire at the border between Kyrgyzstan’s southern Batken province and Tajikistan’s northern Sughd province. According to local media, citing Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbaev, the foreign ministries of the two countries are discussing the situation on the border.
“On April 29 at about 05:45 (23:00 GMT), citizens of Tajikistan opened fire on a military unit located in the village of Batken district. They also threw stones at passing vehicles. One of the Kyrgyz citizens was wounded in the eye”, a Kyrgyz statement said.
“The soldiers of the Kyrgyz Republic opened fire at the soldiers of the Border Troops of the Republic of Tajikistan at the Golovnoy water distribution point at 13:05 (08:05 GMT)”, the Tajik statement read.
