TRIPOLI (Ruptly) — Forces of the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) have said they have retaken control of all administrative borders of Greater Tripoli, including the territory of Tripoli International Airport, from the Libyan National Army (LNA), according to footage from Thursday.
GNA have insisted they have control of Tripoli for some days already, but now say they also have the greater region.
GNA forces can be seen examining captured LNA military vehicles, smouldering wrecks of tanks and vehicle-mounted rocket launchers, and multiple damaged buildings in the area of Fam Molga, on the outskirts of Tripoli, in the Murqub district.
According to local media, LNA are allegedly pulling back forces from the region, but have not officially commented. Tripoli has been besieged since April 2019.
Following the ousting of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the country has been split into areas controlled by the GNA in Tripoli and the northwest, and territories held by eastern-based LNA in Benghazi, led by General Khalifa Haftar.
