BERLIN (Ruptly) — German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rainer Breul warned that the European Union will not allow Turkey to “blackmail” while commenting on Turkey’s decision to open the borders for refugees.

Migrants have been trying to cross the border since Turkey announced on February 27 that it would no longer abide by the 2016 agreement with the EU to halt migration flows into the continent in return for aid.

Speaking at the Federal Press Conference spoke in Berlin on Monday, Breul said:

Turkey clearly bears responsibility for sending these people to a dead end. Unfortunately, Turkey has taken out its concerns — that have to be taken seriously by the European Union and that have to be discussed — on the backs of these people.

This is not our impression that Turkey does not want any other support from the European Union. Quite the opposite. We have the impression that Turkey is interested in further support measures, and talks are being held in Brussels on that issue today between the Turkish president and Mrs. von Der Leyen. And we are ready to participate constructively if there is a need for further support. At the same time, it is clear that we won’t let us be blackmailed.

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has announced a €700&nbsp:mln ($779 mln) aid package to help Greece deal with the large-scale influx of migrants after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan effectively opened the borders.

Erdogan accused the EU of failing to keep its financial promises.
