Demonstrators Take to the Streets after Rumours of Ocalan’s Death
KOBANI (Ruptly) – Demonstrators took to the streets of Kobani on Tuesday after rumours emerged on social media suggesting the founder of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) Abdullah Ocalan died in a Turkish jail.
Ocalan, who is serving a life sentence for high treason, is held at a high security prison in Bursa, northwestern Turkey. Ocalan’s lawyers said, in a written statement, that they were worried about his health and demanded contact with him for the “concerns to be cleared", and noted that the last time they were allowed to visit him in August 2019.
The city’s Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office released a statement saying that Ocalan was “in good health and the allegations should not be taken into account.”
