KARACHI (Ruptly) — Female supporters of Pakistan’s Jamaat-e-Islami party rallied in Karachi on Monday against rival activists marking the International Women’s Day.
The rally opposed the so-called Aurat March, which first took place in Pakistan in 2018, calling for equality and more protection for women against sex crimes.
Demonstrators marched towards the Karachi Press Club to express their concerns.
Rifat Mehboob, a protester says in Urdu:
The slogans which they are chanting are not helpful for women’s cause. These people are fed up of being associated with religion.
Another protester, Rafia Rasheed, says:
It’s a western conspiracy to destroy our family and cultural system. But we want to tell them that our religion Islam gave us full rights and family values and we are safe in our system.
Aasma Safoor, a Jamaat-e-Islami member says:
They are demanding physical relation rights, propagating European agenda. But tell me which kind of rights European women have? They are also in a miserable condition.
