China is fighting a tough battle against separatist terrorism perpetrated by militant Muslim Uyghurs in the far-western region of Xinjiang. Xinjiang is a sparsely populated region on the far north-western frontier, which takes up roughly one sixth of China’s landmass and shares borders with Kyrgyzstan and seven other countries (Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India).
