BISHKEK (24.kg) — Torugart and Irkeshtam checkpoints on the Kyrgyz-Chinese section of the state border will be temporarily closed from September 29 to October 7, the Public Relations and Media Department of the State Border Service reported.

The border will be closed on the initiative of the Chinese side in connection with the celebration of the Education Day of the People’s Republic of China, which is marked on October 1.

Passage of persons, vehicles and cargo will resume on October 8, 2018.

China is fighting a tough battle against separatist terrorism perpetrated by militant Muslim Uyghurs in the far-western region of Xinjiang. Xinjiang is a sparsely populated region on the far north-western frontier, which takes up roughly one sixth of China’s landmass and shares borders with Kyrgyzstan and seven other countries (Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India).
